"I was elected today vice-president of the European Conservatives and Reformists Party, which will facilitate our work for a free Romania and a Europe of sovereign nations. I will represent you with honor!," Simion wrote on Facebook.

Simion ran against Swedish, Czech and Spanish contenders. Apart from president Mateusz Morawiecki, the newly elected party leadership includes only two vice-presidents: Carlo Fidanza (Italy) and Marion Maréchal (France), the granddaughter of famous far-right politician Jean-Marie Le Pen.

According to AUR, George Simion election to ECR Party vice-president "is a recognition of the efforts made by AUR in the fight for democracy and conservative values. At the same time, it represents a commitment of the European partners to supporting AUR's initiatives and to cooperate in promoting a European model based on respect for the sovereignty of member states."

The European Conservatives and Reformists Party was founded in 2009 by British and Polish conservatives, and since 2020 it has been led by Giorgia Meloni, since her time in Italy's opposition. The ECR presidency has now been taken over by former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki.

Following the 2024 election, the release states, the European Conservatives and Reformists Party became the third largest group in the EU legislature. Ever since, the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) has been part of the ECR group in the European Parliament, alongside other strong formations, such as Georgia Meloni's Brothers of Italy, and the Law and Justice Party in Poland.

Under the new leadership, the ECR Party continues to promote a Europe of strong nations, where the citizen is at the center of the priorities of the European institutions, the cited source shows.
