The Government approved on Thursday a draft law for the ratification of the Protocol between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria, signed in Bucharest on 18 June 2025 and in Sofia on 16 June 2025, amending the Agreement between the two governments on cross-border police cooperation in criminal matters, signed in Vidin on 19 May 2009.
According to a Government release, the implementation of the Protocol between the Government of Romania and the Government of the Republic of Bulgaria, proposed for ratification by this draft law, will result in the convening of meetings of the Joint Working Group for cross-border police cooperation in criminal matters at least once a year, as well as whenever necessary, at the initiative of either of the signatory parties.
"Based on the outcomes of these meetings, the parties will be able to analyse and mutually inform each other annually regarding the potential need to revise the operational actions carried out, depending on the developments in the operational situation and cross-border crime trends," the release said.
Furthermore, cross-border pursuit may also be conducted over air borders, as well as in situations involving individuals eluding law enforcement control or when there are reasonable suspicions and grounds to believe that the person has committed an offense.
Moreover, the Protocol proposed for ratification includes provisions regarding the updating of the competent authorities in the area from both countries, including gendarmerie structures, as well as structures with responsibilities in the area of migration management.
