The government on Wednesday approved a methodology for the organisation and operation of the National Program for University Dropout Rate Reduction (PNRAU).

According to the government, the programme is designed to significantly reduce the university dropout rate in Romania's higher education establishments.

"Collaboration with pre-university education establishments, organising demonstration courses in rural areas, offering remedial courses for students who take the Baccalaureate and developing counselling programmes are some of the measures planned to facilitate access and reduce the risks of dropout. Thus, the new piece of legislation provides that higher education establishments develop an action plan on reducing university dropout rates adjusted for the categories of enrolled students at risk of dropping out, and the risk particularities identified."

Another essential element of the programme is the development of an integrated support system for students at risk of dropping out, which includes both academic counselling and psychological support.

By supporting career counselling and guidance centres in all higher education establishments, careful monitoring of students' progress and the implementation of personalised measures, such as integrated support packages, remedial courses and additional activities will be secured.

The programme also suggests the development of re-enrolment policies, as well as support for students who interrupt their studies, in order to facilitate their return to the education system. In addition, PNRAU introduces measures to encourage the active involvement of students in university life, by developing the feeling of belonging and involvement in extracurricular activities.

By supporting volunteering and organising academic orientation sessions at the beginning of each academic year, the programme aims to create a favourable environment for the personal and professional development of students.

Funds for the programme come out of the budget of the Ministry of Education and Research (MEC), including European funds, and higher education establishments will be able to access additional funds under other projects and partnerships.
