Prospects for Romanian-Canadian cooperation in the field of home affairs and the need for coordination in identifying the best solutions to the various forms of transnational organised crime were among the topics discussed on Thursday during a working meeting between Internal Affairs Minister Catalin Predoiu and Canada's Ambassador to Romania, Gavin Buchan.
"The subject will also be addressed during Romanian-Canadian bilateral consultations to be held in Bucharest in March," according to the website of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI).
The two officials referred to the good cooperative relations between the two states, the need for coordination across all aspects of cooperation from the perspective of ensuring security, the adaptation of response mechanisms to the challenges of the current geopolitical context, and the identification of the most effective solutions to combat various forms of transnational organised crime.
"The Romanian side highlighted that, in discussions with representatives of Canada's counterpart interior ministries, a series of proposals were advanced aimed at strengthening data and information exchange, organising operational missions and consolidating the legal framework for cooperation. These proposals form part of the broader steps undertaken by the MAI in relation to external partners, focusing on a proactive approach to preventing and combating organised crime, illegal migration and border protection," the MAI stated.
According to the cited source, the Canadian ambassador welcomed the openness and effectiveness of the proposed measures, noting that the March discussions would provide a further opportunity to advance ongoing projects and agree on new ones.
The two officials underlined the importance of maintaining constant dialogue between Romania and Canada in the field of home affairs, considering that such meetings make a significant contribution to the development of bilateral relations and mutual support on issues of common interest.
