Government's Department for Sustainable Development will launch on Monday a four-year project to monitor sustainable development indicators, in partnership with the Ministry of Investments and European Projects (MIPE), the National Institute of Statistics (INS) and the National Institute of Administration (INA), department head and state advisor Laszlo Borbely announced on Monday.

He attended the official opening of the 'Bucharest Leaders' Summit: A Roadmap to the Future,' an event organised by the MediaUno Association.

'Today we have launched a new project for monitoring the indicators we have, together with MIPE, the National Institute of Statistics, INA and another directorate from the General Secretariat of the Government. It will be a four-year project focused on specialisation and deepening knowledge in sustainable development, because it is, in fact, a mindset. We must change our mentality, it is about achieving balance between the economy, competitiveness, the social dimension and environmental protection. Only if you have balance can you achieve sustainable development,' said Laszlo Borbely.

According to him, Romania already has a body of 2,300 experts in sustainable development, and the UN mentioned the country as an example of good practice in this area in a summary document published in July last year following the sustainable development summit.

Borbely also mentioned that by the end of the year a unified platform for sustainable development will be operational.
