Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from industry in Romania fell 7% in 2023 compared with 2022 and by 39.2% compared with 2008, while GHG emissions from households amounted to 22.1 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent, up 2.3% from 2022, according to data the National Institute of Statistics (INS) published on Friday.
According to the source, the air emissions account records data on emissions generated by households and resident economic units, regardless of whether they operate within the national economic territory or abroad. This account includes greenhouse gases and air pollutants, providing a detailed picture of the impact of economic activities on air quality.
Between 2008 and 2023, industrial GHG emissions showed a downward trend, while household emissions in 2023 increased 49.3% compared with 2008. Across the economy as a whole, GHG emissions decreased 30.5% over this period.
The sector showing the sharpest reduction in GHG emissions was the production and supply of electricity, heat, gas, hot water and air conditioning, which recorded a 63.2% decrease in 2023 compared with 2008.
The gas contributing most to total GHG emissions is carbon dioxide, which predominates across most economic sectors, particularly in manufacturing, electricity and heat production and supply, and in households.
In 2023, carbon dioxide accounted for 47.9% of GHG emissions in industry and 19.1% in households.
The INS notes that acidifying gases are air pollutants contributing to environmental acidification, leading to the gradual degradation of soils and waters, the loss of biodiversity and the decline of ecosystem productivity.
Acidifying gases, including SOx, NOx and NH3, measured in tonnes of SO2 equivalent according to their degree of acidification, fell by 58.8% in 2023 compared with 2008.
SOx emissions decreased by 94.5% in 2023 compared with 2008, with their share in total acidifying gases dropping from 47.7% in 2008 to 6.4% in 2023.
In 2023, NOx emissions were 4,400 tonnes of SO2 equivalent, down 37.1% compared with 2008.
