Social Democratic Party (PSD) first vice president Sorin Grindeanu stated on Monday that Romania will not leave the European Union, regardless of who of the two candidates in the presidential elections becomes head of state.

He was asked by journalists at the Palace of Parliament what his opinion was about the letter of the seven former US ambassadors to Romania, according to which Romanians have a choice between Vladimir Putin and America on Sunday.

"That's not the point. I urge you not to make a kind of aggression against an electorate that really doesn't swallow this black or white. And I'll tell you why. I don't think that if one of the candidates comes out, and we know who he is, we'll leave the European Union. I don't believe this. (...) It's very difficult to leave the European Union even if you have an isolationist president, because the Romanian people don't want this. A referendum and other things are needed," Grindeanu explained.

According to him, on the other hand, there may be an isolationist policy of the new president: "To be isolated within the European Union."

"The rest really defies intelligence. You can't leave the European Union, even if a president wants to," the social-democrat leader argued.
