PSD chairman Sorin Grindeanu claims that, following the five regional meetings held so far with party organizations, his colleagues have told him that they no longer wish to continue "in this form" within the governing coalition.
"We had five regional meetings, as you well know, in over 30 counties. In the afternoon we also have the meeting on Ilfov - Bucharest. What my colleagues from these more than 30 counties tell me, or they told me and my colleagues from the central leadership, is that "we no longer want to continue in this form", that we can find, let's say, a better form of organization within the coalition or maybe even go into opposition. But in the current form, there was not a single colleague who wanted to continue things. But we will see. Because we still have, as I said, we have held five regional ones, this afternoon is the sixth and immediately after the Easter Holidays we will have the last two," Grindeanu declared in Parliament.
Answering a question, he indirectly confirmed that one of the scenarios could refer to the reconfiguration of the Government.
Asked if he would be prepared to take over as prime minister, Grindeanu replied: "This is an issue that I would not like to debate and I promise you that, once the vote on April 20, once the decision that my colleagues will make, I will be as transparent as possible and we will be as transparent as possible, discussing the option that will be chosen by my colleagues."
Regarding the five regional meetings, the PSD leader detailed that "there were generally dissatisfactions".
"Discontents have been expressed about the way the coalition is functioning. But I want to be very clear. Every time, at each of these meetings, and I will do the same at the last three, I started my presentation with the self-evaluation part. Almost all the ministers were at these meetings every time. I presented the situation in general and then I said how I see and how we see the overall picture, explaining the three scenarios. Of course, the second one, the one in which, let's say, we would make a reconfiguration within the coalition, involves more values," he explained.
He added, in context, that "it's not PSD's job to say what PNL and USR are doing."
"We will decide for ourselves. If we find understanding with the governing partners within this coalition, we will move forward. If not, the PSD can go into opposition," the president of the Social Democrats pointed out.
Asked what the PSD will do if the liberals refuse to come up with a new prime minister proposal and pass the responsibility to the PSD, Grindeanu replied: "Let's see, let's get to that situation. I'm telling you that the PSD, just as it entered this coalition in good faith last summer, will try to act in good faith in a coalition of pro-European parties. If possible. We will discuss ourselves and say things from the PSD's perspective. If, let's say, a majority is found within the pro-European coalition, we move forward. If not, the PSD can go into opposition."
Regarding the opportunity for early elections in this period of crisis, he pointed out that "this issue is becoming repetitive - this one with stability".
"Of course, we discussed it earlier with the business community and we and their lords more or less agreed that stability is good if it offers you prosperity. Stability is good if the direction the country is going in is a good one. Today, Romanians, about 80% of Romanians, say that the direction is wrong. And then, I'll give you another example: in Bulgaria, in the last four years, there have been eight or nine rounds of elections. In Bulgaria, at this moment, we have a better country rating than Romania. (...) I didn't say that I want us to enter an area of early elections.
