The President of the Association of Hunters and Anglers (AGVPS), Ovidiu Ionescu, says that local authorities must intervene "directly" in the case of bears attacking local households, given that attacks by these mammals have increased "exponentially" in recent years.

Present the other day in Tulcea, on the occasion of an AGVPS meeting, Ovidiu Ionescu told AGERPRES that, in the context of the current budget deficit, paying compensation to households attacked by bears is not an appropriate measure, given that the number of these animals and the problems caused to local residents has increased.

"There are areas where intervention is mandatory and local authorities must find the courage to intervene directly, because since 2016, attacks on humans have increased exponentially, as have the damages paid by the Ministry of Environment. At the moment, when we complain that we have a very large deficit, throwing money away irrationally, for a downright ridiculous conservation, is not the best solution," said the president of AGVPS.

Ovidiu Ionescu pleaded in this context for the resumption of bear hunting.

"The fact that the forests in Romania can support 4,000 bears and we have at least double the number of bears that live on domestic animals, the damage caused to households, shows that we cannot eliminate this phenomenon only by trying to regulate the population naturally or by extracting a limited number of animals," Ovidiu Ionescu said.

In his opinion, measures to protect the population from bear attacks must vary from educating the population to interventions in case of need.
