An event dedicated to Constantin Brancusi as photographer, organised by the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR) in London, will take place on March 19 at the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery in the UK capital.

According to a press release sent by ICR London to AGERPRES on Wednesday, the event - a conversation exploring Brancusi's artistic identity as a photographer, with particular emphasis on photographs of his own sculptures - will bring together gallerist and collector David Grob and art historian and researcher Jonathan Vernon.

"They will reflect on the importance of photography in Brancusi's creative practice and on how the artist used this medium to shape the perception of his sculptural works. The conversation will offer the public a unique opportunity to gain a deeper insight into a lesser-known but significant aspect of Brancusi's artistic vision," the source said.

The event is the third in the Brancusi 150 Season, organised in partnership with the Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery, in the context of the presentation at the London gallery of the first exhibition in the United Kingdom dedicated to Brancusi's photographs in more than two decades, as well as the artist's first solo exhibition in London since the major retrospective held at Tate Modern in 2004.

Opened on January 13 and running until the end of March, the exhibition brings together three decades of the Romanian artist's photographic activity, with most of the works being shown in London for the first time.

Photography represented an essential part of Constantin Brancusi's artistic practice, serving both as a documentary tool for his sculptures and as an artistic medium in its own right.

Some of his works survive exclusively through photographs, such as the sculpture Woman Looking at Herself in the Mirror (1909-1914), which was later adapted into Princess X (1915-16; Centre Pompidou, Paris).

In 1956, Brancusi bequeathed his entire studio to the French state, including a substantial collection of photographs. These later became the central element of an exhibition organised in 1995 at the Centre Pompidou alongside his first major retrospective in France.

A major exhibition of photographs taken by Constantin Brancusi was held in October 2025 in Krakow, Poland. In 2026, dedicated by the Romanian state to Constantin Brancusi, the sculptor will also be honoured with a large-scale exhibition in Berlin.

The great artist is also at the centre of the Romania-Italy Cultural Year 2026, a project aimed at promoting the shared heritage, creativity and values of the two countries.

Constantin Brancusi will also be celebrated through other major projects at national and international level throughout 2026.
