The extraordinary congress of the National Liberal Party (PNL) to elect its leadership will take place on 12 July, announced the party's interim president and designated Prime Minister, Ilie Bolojan, following the meeting of the National Political Bureau.

"The election calendar was approved because, as you know, PNL currently has interim leadership. For the upcoming period, it is necessary to have stable leadership in order to support the reform programme, which must be adopted, including through parliamentary legislation. Therefore, this Saturday a National Council has been scheduled - at the end of next week - and on 12 July the party's Extraordinary Congress will take place," Ilie Bolojan said at the Palace of Parliament on Sunday.

He said that during the meeting of the National Political Bureau, the main changes to be made to the PNL statute were also approved.

'One of the most important changes will be the reservation of a number of seats in all leadership structures for individuals who are not PNL members, so that we can bring in competence and added value. Starting next week, once this statute project is validated by the National Council and then approved by the Congress, PNL will open its doors to competent and high-quality individuals, in order to modernise the party,' Bolojan explained.

The liberal leader also mentioned that the party's direction and ideological orientation were established, which will be the subject of debates over the next three weeks.

"My proposal is for the PNL to consolidate itself as a liberal-conservative party, which means modernisation with roots. We will support modernisation in all areas, but without losing our traditions and national identity," he added.
