ING Bank has launched instant mobile payments at POS terminals for large retailers, through RoPay, the solution being available for the first time at Auchan, the bank announced on Wednesday.
"The national instant mobile payment service, RoPay, is getting closer to Romanian users with the first launched by ING Bank Romania and Auchan Retail Romania: payment at large retailers by scanning a QR code displayed on the POS, using the mobile banking application", the press release reads.
At the same time, from October 6, the service will be available in Auchan stores across the country.
ING Bank thus becomes the first bank in Romania to offer the solution for accepting RoPay payments at POS terminals for a large retailer, after announcing in April 2025 the launch of the RoPay service for individuals by scanning a QR code.
"On October 1, we mark a first for the local market and start implementing RoPay directly on merchants' POS terminals. We start in Auchan Drumul Taberei, Auchan Constanta Mall, Auchan Ploiesti, Auchan Cluj Mall and Auchan Militari stores, with a strategic partner in the retail area - Auchan Retail Romania - which has a network of over 490 stores nationwide. Moreover, we are happy to start this second stage of the RoPay implementation process just a few months after the first step taken for individuals: reading the QR code from the ING Home'Bank application", said Raluca Tintoiu, deputy CEO & Head of Wholesale Banking ING Bank Romania, quoted in the press release.
