Interim President Ilie Bolojan said in a message on Tuesday that he has invited the parties to consultations because decisions may be made at special European Council on March 6 with direct consequences on European foreign and defence policy which might require the adoption of certain measures by Romania.

"Why I have invited the parties to the consultations: next week there will be a European Council meeting, which has important security issues on the agenda. It is possible that decisions will be made with direct consequences on European foreign and defence policy and thus, the adoption of certain measures by Romania may be required," said Bolojan.

He pointed out that the topics on the European Council's agenda are the European defence policy, support for Ukraine and the increase of budgets allocated to military spending.

"In terms of defence policy, European countries will have to assume a more important role and bear a greater share of the costs of peacekeeping in Europe. Support for Ukraine is aimed both at the current conflict situation and at providing support in view of the ceasefire and peace negotiations. Finally, the increase in defence budgets is a trend that cannot be avoided," the interim president added.

Ilie Bolojan emphasized that in this complicated and dynamic context, in which we are witnessing international changes, it may be necessary for our country to adapt its foreign policy to respond to these challenges, adding that there are things that will not change, namely Romania's national interests, namely a safe country, a prosperous country, a country of trust, at peace with its neighbors.

"We are a safe country because we benefit from solid defence guarantees. We owe our security and that of Europe to the NATO shield and the guarantees given by the Strategic Partnership with the United States. The presence of US and allied troops on Romanian territory has done nothing but to strengthen Europe's security, and we will plead for their maintenance. Belonging to the European Union has ensured our progress as a country in recent years. European investments and funds, access to markets and opportunities have generated prosperity and better living conditions. It is a path on which we need to move forward," added Bolojan.

He pointed out that "the weight of Romania's word abroad will depend on internal political stability, good governance and access to European funds, as well as on the free and fair conduct of the elections scheduled for May".

"Regardless of the internal political disputes, I am convinced that we will find common points of view in support of our country's national interests," Ilie Bolojan concluded.

Interim President Ilie Bolojan invited on Wednesday the chairpersons of the political parties and formations represented in Parliament for consultations in order to prepare our country's position for the Special European Council on March 6.
