Romania's Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) has drawn up for 2026-2030 projects worth approximately EUR 3 billion focused on weapons, drones, mobility, cybersecurity and the protection of critical infrastructures.

"These investments will strengthen the MAI's emergency management capacity to public order and civil protection, increasing interoperability with European partners and national resilience," according to a MAI press statement released on Monday.

The funding is envisaged unser the SAFE Mechanism, which supports the purchase of modern equipment and technologies for the police, gendarmerie, rapid response services and civil protection, supporting the modernisation of infrastructure and compliance with EU commitments.

The projects include advanced surveillance systems, protective and mobility equipment, drones for monitoring, technologies for emergency management and secure communications. These have dual applicability - both in peacetime and in conflict situations - and are aligned with MAI's acquisition priorities.

At the same time, the ministry promotes the involvement of the national industry under partnerships and technology transfer with other European countries and companies, in order to develop integrated and efficient operational capabilities.

The total budget is divided equally between two strategic areas: public order and security, and emergency management and civil protection - each to be earmarked EUR 1.4 billion.

The SAFE Facility, which has a total budget of EUR 150 billion, provides low-interest loans for investments in defence products and aims to strengthen Europe's defence industrial base, enhance interoperability, and reduce fragmentation.
