Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu on Thursday told Interior Minister Catalin Predoiu that he has "a free hand" to clean subordinate structures "from top to bottom", following the case of the drugged 19-year-old driver who barrelled into a group of students in the 2 Mai seaside resort, killing two.

"We saw the first dismissals in the scandal of the drugged young man who killed two students in the 2 Mai resort. I understand that this was a consequence of the investigation conducted by the Control Body of the Minister of the Interior, which determined certain direct responsibilities in this tragedy.

We are not talking here just simple personal mistakes, but serious flaws which show that the system did not work in a trivial situation of a motorist stopped in traffic by police. Unfortunately, by the way they acted, but also by their subsequent behavior, certain policemen became moral accomplices in the crime," Ciolacu declared at the Victoria Palace at the beginning of the government meeting, agerpres reports.

He emphasized the importance of stepping up the fight against drugs, showing that action must be taken against the dealers, who represent the "source of evil".

"I cannot accept the excuse that we don't have enough drug test machines. If there aren't enough, please immediately start the auction, if you don't have money, the government will make it available to you. We can buy any equipment we need, less honor, dignity and respect for the policeman's uniform. Moreover, I would like you to take measures to effectively fight drugs. Without dealers, there wouldn't be consumers. This is where action is required, this is the source of evil, and this is where the police should concentrate their efforts in the coming period, especially since schools will start in a few weeks. The police must stay less in the offices and more where action is needed. I assure you that the vast majority of police personnel are correct people who do their duty and respect their uniform. We only must let them do their job," said the prime minister.
