Internal Affairs Minister Catalin Predoiu said on Wednesday that the indictment of former president Ion Iliescu and former prime minister Petre Roman in the June 1990 Mineriada [the miners' riot - ed.n.] case is to be appreciated, even if it came later than "we all would have liked",
"As you know, I said it time and again whenever I was asked about the justice cases, that I do not comment on them. On the other hand, during my term as Minister of Justice, I have publicly expressed the opinion, at a general, principled level, that a very long time has passed without this important case of the Justice system being settled, judged and clarified for the good of Justice, for the idea of law, but also for history, for the Romanian citizens who have the right to know the truth as it was and as the courts will establish it. That is why I believe that this moment is one that should be appreciated, even if it came later than we all would have liked, but, on the other hand, we must recognize that it is a very complex case," Predoiu said at the Palace of Parliament.
Former president Ion Iliescu and former prime minister Petre Roman have been indicted by the General Prosecutor's Office in the Mineriada case of June 1990, for committing crimes against humanity.
In the same case, former deputy prime minister Gelu-Voican Voiculescu, former Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) director Virgil Magureanu, Adrian Sarbu (former chief of staff of Petre Roman), Miron Cozma (former leader of the miners in the Jiului Valley), General (r) Vasile Dobrinoiu (former commander of the Higher Military School of Officers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs) and Colonel (r) Peter Petre (former commander of Military Unit 0575 Magurele, with the Ministry of Internal Affairs).
Aged 95, Ion Iliescu was sent to trial in this case along with the other defendants in 2017, but the courts ordered the case to be returned to the Military Prosecutor's Office for the investigation to start over.
