Regional security and support for the reinforcement of the democratic and European path of the Republic of Moldova were among the topics tackled by Minister of the Interior Catalin Predoiu with his Moldovan counterpart Daniella Misail-Nichitin, who was in Bucharest on Thursday for the ninth edition of the Black Sea and Balkans Security Forum.
"Streamlining border traffic was another topic discussed in detail, with the two officials agreeing on the need for a constructive approach to making control at border crossing points more efficient, including by coordinated control," the Ministry of the Interior said in a release.
Romania and the Republic of Moldova have been already implementing this type of control since April 15, 2023 at the Albita - Leuseni border checkpoint, on the direction of entry to Romania, and the Galati - Giurgiulesti border crossing point will follow next.
"The shared border should not be treated as a simple line of separation, but as an area of strengthened operational cooperation, where our efforts come together for the benefit of citizens and for protecting security. Our authorities are making special efforts to regulate these aspects and through a consistent development of the border infrastructure we will achieve the expected results," Predoiu declared, stressing that coordinated control and guaranteeing border security are complementary goals requiring consistent investments and continued cross-border cooperation.
The two ministers voiced appreciation for the dynamics of bilateral cooperation on preventing and combating cross-border crime by best putting to use all available police cooperation mechanisms: task forces, working groups, joint teams, joint patrols.
The over 250 joint missions carried out in the first four months of the year on the border with the Republic of Moldova were referenced as an example.
"The meeting reaffirmed the unwavering commitment of both parties to strengthening cooperation in a complex international context, marked by multiple challenges, both within the two states and at regional level," the Ministry of the Interior said.
