Iohannis: Firefighters, unobtrusive heroes who remain vigilant in our service, regardless of circumstances
On Wednesday, September 13, Romanian Firefighters Day, President Klaus Iohannis sent a message in which he says that firefighters are "unobtrusive heroes, who remain vigilant in our service, regardless of the circumstances."
"Firefighters Day gives us the opportunity to express our gratitude and respect to these unobtrusive heroes, who remain vigilant in our service, regardless of the circumstances. They are the first to respond to calls for help in difficult and dangerous situations. Whether they face the flames of a devastating fire, whether they act in the middle of an unleashed storm or a serious accident, these brave rescuers act without hesitation, putting our safety first," says Iohannis in the message delivered by presidential adviser Ion Oprisor at a tribute ceremony of the hero firefighter in Bucharest.
Iohannis adds that Romanian firefighters carry out their work in a complex and dangerous environment, constantly endangering themselves in order to protect the lives and property of citizens.
"The war in Ukraine, extreme weather conditions and other recent challenges, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, have made it difficult for EU member states to help each other. In such cases, under the rescEU reserve, the European Union offers an additional level of protection and ensures a faster and more comprehensive response. Through the Department for Emergency Management and the General Emergency Management Inspectorate, Romania remains one of the important actors at the European level in the development of rescEU response capacities, being the first state to develop a European reserve of medical equipment as a response to the consequences of the pandemic," adds the President.
He says that the Crevedia tragedy was a "horrendous trial" for the Romanian firefighters.
"Today, our thoughts also go to those injured in those devastating explosions," says the head of state.
He adds that such dramatic events remind everyone of how important preparation is to prevent and effectively manage emergencies.
"At the same time, I am asking the state authorities not to have any tolerance towards those who violate the laws of the country," points out Iohannis.
Effective collaboration among the government bodies, civil society and citizens in terms of preparing for emergencies must become the rule, not the exception, he says.
Iohannis mentions the contribution of firefighters on the border with Moldova and Ukraine, but also in the missions in Turkey, the island of Corsica and Greece.
"This year you have also had an efficient activity on the border with Moldova and Ukraine, where you contributed to the management of the influx of people entering Romania. At the same time, you have distinguished yourself by your prompt response and outstanding results in your difficult missions in Turkey, the island of Corsica, as well as in Greece in the summer of this year," says Iohannis, adding that the value and human quality of the Romanian firefighters were also reconfirmed by a Romanian team that became the world champion in providing advanced first aid in trauma within the multinational competition organized by the World Rescue Organisation.
President Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday decorated the battle flags of the emergency management inspectorates of the counties of Bihor, Brasov, Mures and Suceava and awarded national decorations to some military personnel from the departments operating under the authority of the General Emergency Management Inspectorate as a token of "appreciation for the courage, devotion and spirit of sacrifice proven in accomplishing the missions of defending life, property and the environment against disasters and fires, as well as in the implementation of civil protection measures."
