The observance of the human rights, the acceptance and achievement of diversity, the strengthening of the rule of law and of liberal democracy are guarantees of the human development and social peace, on Monday said President Klaus Iohannis in a message on the Day of National Minorities in Romania.

"The National Minorities Day in Romania gives me the occasion to present my special regard to the Romanian citizens belonging to the national minorities. I wish them fulfillment of their aspirations for a wealthy life within the Romanian nation, to keep and pass on to the next generations the cultural identity they have inherited from their ancestors," the president says in his message.

He reminds that he has recently promulgated the law that consecrates the day of 18 December as the Day of National Minorities in Romania "as a clear expression that the Romanian state acknowledges, respects, protects and puts forward the common heritage, cultural and religious, of dialogue and good cohabitation of the entire nation."

"In Romania, the Centenary of the Great Union, the political action, the citizens' moves, the education and the culture deeds must stay and develop under the aegis of tolerance, openness, acceptance of the difference and respect to each other. The celebration of the Great Union's Centenary wouldn't be reasonable without the national minorities who have had a particular contribution to the modern Romania's progress," Iohannis says.

The president mentions that the national minorities are "living, vibrant part of the Romanian society" contributing not only to the preservation and development of an ancient heritage of its own, but also to the evolution of the society as an entirety.

"The enthusiastic, unanimous support given to our country's Euro-Atlantic path is the best maturity proof of a nation that is fully capitalizing its good relations between the majority and the national minorities. The observance of the human rights, the acceptance and achievement of diversity, the strengthening of the rule of law and of liberal democracy are guarantees of the human development and social peace. These values and principles give essence to the action in the public space. I call you, dear fellow nationals, to find inside them the depth of this day dedicated to the national minorities and the meaning of its marking as a national day. I urge you that together on the Eve of the Centennial, to gather efforts to accomplishing the hopes of those who 100 years ago, have fathered the Great Union: a modern, strong Romania, a Romania for everybody," Iohannis adds.
