Representatives of the Ministry of Energy are working, together with all relevant authorities, to create legislation that will ensure full compliance with the sanctions regime established by the United States regarding the Lukoil company and for the continuity of Petrotel Ploiesti's refining activities for the marketing of petroleum products, Energy Minister Bogdan Ivan announced on Tuesday evening.
"We protect Romania's energy security and firmly apply the international sanctions targeting Lukoil. My colleagues in the Ministry of Energy continue to work, together with all relevant authorities, to create legislation that will ensure, on the one hand, full compliance with the sanctions regime established by the United States, and on the other hand, the continuity of Petrotel Ploiesti's refining activities, as well as the marketing of petroleum products, without jeopardizing the supply of the national fuel market. I say it bluntly: I will not request an extension of the November 21 deadline set by the American authorities," the minister wrote on his Facebook page.
He added that he would support the replication and uniform application of the sanctions initiated by the US throughout the European Union.
The minister also stressed that "Romania must take control of the company" to guarantee the full implementation of international measures, to protect the jobs of the 5,000 employees and to ensure the stability and security of the national energy system.
The United States Treasury Department announced sanctions on October 22 against the two main Russian oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, in response to "Russia's lack of serious commitment to a peace process to end the war in Ukraine."
"Given President Putin's refusal to end this senseless war, the Treasury is sanctioning Russia's two largest oil companies, which fund the Kremlin's war machine," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement.
The two companies were already sanctioned by the US, but this time the sanctions were extended to subsidiaries and affiliated companies in which they hold a stake of more than 50%, directly or indirectly.
