January - May direct investments in Romania by non-residents increased 35.57 percent to EUR 3.342 billion, as against EUR 2.465 billion in the same period of 2023, according to a release of the National Bank of Romania (BNR).
"Direct investments by non-residents in Romania amounted to EUR 3.342 billion (as against EUR 2.465 billion over January - May 2023), of which equity investment (including the estimated net reinvested profit) amounted to a net EUR 2.930 billion, and intercompany loans stood at EUR 412 million net," the BNR release states.
In the first five months of 2024, the number of newly established companies running on foreign capital in Romania dropped by 1.2 percent from the year-ago period to 2,879, according to data centralised by the National Trade Register Office.
The 2,879 new companies had a paid-up capital of almost $14.359 million, 16 percent down from $17.1 million registered for the businesses incorporated over January - May 2023.
As many as 571 companies with foreign capital participation were registered in May 2024 (-8.9 percent year-over-year), with a paid-up capital of RON 1.95 million). By activity fields, most registrations were in wholesale and retail trade, car and motorcycle repair (26.09 percent of the total), professional, administrative, scientific and technical activities (21.54 percent) and transport, warehousing and communications (17.86 percent).
At the end of May 2024 there were 254,105 companies with foreign participation in Romania, with a paid-up capital worth a combined $70.643 billion.
