Romanian judoka Ioan Dzitac won the gold medal in the 73 kg category, on Friday, at the European Judo Under-23 Championships in Chisinau.
Dzitac entered the second round directly, with a victory over German Levi Maerkt, in the round of 16 he defeated Armenian Artak Torosian, and in the quarterfinals he overcame Georgian Ghiorghi Loladze. In the semifinals he won over Hungarian Aron Szabo, and in the final he defeated another Georgian, Mate Beruashvili.
In the women's category, Laura Bogdan was defeated in the first round (round of 16) in the 48 kg category by Bulgarian Sofia Ranghelova.
Luciana Catana lost in the first round in the 52 kg category, to Serbian Bojana Savic.
Within the 57 kg, Vanessa Tolea beat Moldovan Elisaveta Pavlenco, but lost in the round of 16 to Georgian athlete Nino Loladze, who later won bronze.
In the 63 kg category, Orsolya Lajos was defeated in the first round by Latvian Sofija Ponomarjova.
Romania is participating in the competition with 12 judokas, 6 in the men's category and 6 in the women's category. David Gliga (90 kg category), Rares Arsenie, Alexandru Sibisan (both in the 100 kg category), Bogdan Petre, Darius Dobre (both in the +100 kg category), Daria Tudorache, Roxana Visa (both in the +78 kg category) will also compete.
308 judokas from 37 countries registered for the competition, 172 in the men's category and 136 in the women's category.
At last year's edition, in Pila (Poland), Romania won a single medal, bronze, through Florentina Ivanescu (cat. 63 kg).
