Kelemen Hunor: I asked the PM to abandon the austerity measures, throw them in the bin
Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Chairman Kelemen Hunor said that the draft measures to reduce budget spending represent "an attempt at cultural assassination with premeditation" and that he asked Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu to abandon these "austerity measures," "simply to throw them in the dustbin, because that is where they belong."
"In the so-called unassumed project, the Government has recently declared war on culture, proposing that, in the future, local authorities may spend up to 7.5% of their own revenues to support cultural, religious and sports activities and institutions. First of all, whoever invented this has probably never been to a concert and is unlikely to have ever seen a theatre or museum inside in his life. Secondly, Romania is currently among the last places in the European Union in terms of support for culture. This support for culture is not much more than half a percent of the national GDP in the country of Brancusi and Enescu. This small amount is now to be cut even more, by order of the Government, against the interests and needs of local communities," said UDMR leader Kelemen Hunor, in a message published on Tuesday on Facebook, in which excerpts from his speech at the opening of the 14th Hungarian Cultural Days in Cluj are reproduced, told Agerpres.
Kelemen Hunor also adds that the Government's intentions in this regard represent "an attempt at cultural assassination with premeditation."
However, Kelemen Hunor, former Minister of Culture, said that he asked Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu a week ago to abandon these measures, and the latter promised that he would take into account the arguments he presented to him.
"A week ago I asked the Prime Minister to abandon these austerity measures. Simply throw them in the bin, because that's where they belong! I've given him all my arguments. The Prime Minister promised me that he will take these arguments into account, but we will see what will happen," said Kelemen Hunor.
The 14th edition of the Hungarian Cultural Days festival in Cluj officially opened on Monday August 14 with an event at the National Opera in Cluj-Napoca.
