The chairman of the UDMR, Kelemen Hunor, declared on Tuesday that the popular revolt will be "extremely justified" if this version of the law regarding the reform of magistrates' pensions also fails at the Constitutional Court.

"This risk exists permanently. I'm telling you, if this version, correct and extremely balanced, falls before the Constitutional Court, then I don't know what else can be done and the popular revolt will be extremely justified. It's impossible for you, the Parliament, the Government, the Legislature, not to have the power, the capacity to regulate a certain area, because there are people there who don't accept that there should be regulation and maybe self-regulation is the only possibility they accept. If it falls before the Constitutional Court, it's better for us all to go home," the UDMR leader told Digi 24.

In his opinion, the 10-year transition period for increasing the retirement age of magistrates is "far too long"

"I would have gone for a variant without a transition that is much too long, because it is difficult to explain to people why a very long transition period is needed for magistrates, when, when you increase the retirement age for people, then you don't have such a long transition period. And the Government, ultimately, the Prime Minister, after discussions with magistrates, came up with a 10-year transition. Honestly, I, personally, didn't like it, but I accepted that that is why he is the Prime Minister and that is why he leads the Government, to come up with such solutions. (...) Ten years, from my point of view, is a long time, it is much too long, long enough for a magistrate to know what is coming and approximately when it is coming. The important thing is that in that field, we can really talk about reform, because the retirement age is changing, the length of service," the UDMR chairman added.
