Chairman of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) Kelemen Hunor said on Tuesday that discussions at the Cotroceni Palace included questions about a possible extraordinary parliamentary session - how it would function and whether it should be held in early July or later.
"The president did not express an opinion. He listened and asked a few questions. There were questions about a possible extraordinary session - how it would work, when it would take place, at the beginning of July or later. And of course this depends on who forms the government. There is no point in convening a session in early July if the new government has nothing ready to bring before Parliament. The new Cabinet also needs two or three weeks to prepare the projects requiring parliamentary approval, especially if it cannot issue simple ordinances during the recess," Kelemen said at Cotroceni. He added that there was no discussion of early elections or other related topics.
Asked whether Alexandru Nazare could be a viable candidate for prime minister, Kelemen said this would not pose a problem for UDMR. "From our point of view, it wouldn't be an issue, but clearly this does not depend on us. First, the parties must decide whether they want a government with at least a minimal majority until February next year, or whether someone prefers to govern alone or in a minority. I will not hide the fact that a minority government has real chances of lasting until 2028," he said.
