The largest thyroid tumour in Romania and Europe was this week removed at a private clinic in Romania from a 33-year-old female patient.

Performing the surgery was primary physician, endocrine and thyroid surgery specialist Ionut Sandu.

"The operation was performed on a 33-year-old female patient with a giant thyroid goitre. (...) The case is unique, and it involved the largest excised thyroid tumour so far registered with the European Registry for Endocrine Surgery. Due to the complexity of the surgery and for the safety of the patient, an advanced technique was used - intraoperative neuromonitoring of the laryngeal nerves. (...) Due to the very abundant vascularisation and the giant size of the tumour (weighing 1,580 g, 36 centimetres in diameter), such an intervention usually takes five-six hours to perform. But thanks to the vascular closure devices and the neuromonitoring system at the operating room, the operation took two hours to perform," the clinic reports.

The thyroid surgery is said to have gone smoothly, and the patient is recovering quickly, having been discharged just one day after surgery, pain and risk-free.
