The Million Friends Association has a one-off Valentine's Day gift offer for this year: a virtual adoption certificate for a rescued bear or a Super VIP tour of the Libearty Bear Sanctuary in Zarnesti.
"The Zarnesti Bear Sanctuary invites romantic couples to a VIP tour among happy bears. Because happy bears also exist, not just roadside begging bears. The tour costs RON 300, but - mind you - only ten couples will be able to ride the train, so hurry up! And those who cannot make it to the sanctuary on Friday can give a friend, girlfriend or boyfriend, a bear adoption certificate, and the money will buy the bears the honey supply for a year. We thus engage in a heartfelt cause which lasts longer than any material gift that would end up collecting dust in a drawer," the Association's president Cristina Lapis declared on Tuesday.
Both the adoption certificate, with a one-year validity, and the VIP tour cost RON 300, compared to the usual fee for the latter which is RON 3,000.
In the approximately two decades since it was established, the Zarnesti Bear Sanctuary has taken in over 100 rescue bears.
Anyone who wants to "adopt" a bear can do so throughout the year, not just on Valentine's Day, with the money collected from these donations being used to feed the bears. The Libearty Zarnesti Bear Sanctuary, acknowledged by National Geographic Traveler as the most ethical animal sanctuary in the world, is also the largest such facility dedicated to brown bears.
