Loans to Romania's non-government sector decrease by 0.6pct in Jan 2025

At end-January 2025, loans to non-government sector granted by credit institutions decreased 0.6% (-1.5% in real terms) from December 2024 to RON 418,630.2 million, according to data released on Tuesday by the National Bank of Romania (BNR).

RON-denominated loans, representing 69.8% of total volume of loans to non-government sector, declined 0.9%, while foreign currency-denominated loans, making up 30.2% of total loans to the non-government sector, advanced 0.1% when stated in RON (0.01% when stated in EUR).

In year-on-year comparison, loans to non-government sector advanced 8.8% (3.7% in real terms), on the back of 10.9% increase in RON-denominated loans (5.7% in real terms) and a 4.1% rise in foreign currency-denominated loans stated in RON (similar evolution when stated in EUR).

At end-January 2025, credit to general government granted by credit institutions decreased 1.1% from December 2024, to RON 247,399.6 million. In year-on-year comparison, this indicator grew by 23.3% (17.5%).

At end-January 2025, broad money (M3) amounted to RON 734,829.2 million, down 0.9% (-1.8% in real terms1) month on month. In year-on-year comparison, broad money rose by 10.1% (4.9% in real terms).
