The Ministry of Foreign Affairs will use the full amount of fees related to notarial services provided at the request of foreign individuals or legal entities to pay the repatriation expenses of Romanian citizens who have died on the territory of their countries of residence, in case the family cannot bear the costs, stipulates a project adopted on Wednesday, with a majority of votes, by the plenary session of the Chamber of Deputies.

The draft law aims to amend paragraph (4) of art. 18 of Law no. 36/1995, as well as to supplement Law no. 198/2008, in the sense of establishing the charging/tariffing of certain notarial services provided by Romanian consular offices for foreign natural or legal persons.

According to the project, voted in the form adopted by the Senate, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will use the fees related to these services in full to pay the repatriation expenses of Romanian citizens deceased in their countries of residence, in situations where the families cannot bear the costs and there is no possibility of burial or cremation in the respective country, as well as to cover the expenses necessary for the proper functioning of the activity of Romania's consular offices abroad, for the benefit of Romanian citizens.

PNL deputy Raluca Turcan emphasized that the project initiated by the liberals comes to the aid of those who are going through a "painful tragedy", due to the high costs of repatriating deceased relatives.

"PNL deputies initiated this initiative and voted "for", as it supports Romanians in the diaspora and their families. Today, there are over five million Romanians living in the diaspora and there are many situations in which the families of those working abroad suffer extra when they are unable to repatriate the bodies of the deceased, due to the huge costs. In practice, repatriation turns into a personal tragedy for those who lose family members. It is a painful reality and, for this reason, liberal deputies created the possibility that, from consular fees for notarial acts, the repatriation of those who died abroad can be ensured. We have therefore created both the source of income, but also the mechanism through which suffering relatives in the country can return the bodies of the deceased," specified Raluca Turcan.

The Senate, as the first chamber notified, adopted the legislative initiative in the meeting of December 18, 2023, with the Chamber of Deputies being the decision-making body.
