The Air Force Staff (SMFA) continues to monitor on Romanian territory the drones used by Russia in its military aggression against Ukraine, and pilots have authorisation to engage the aerial target, the spokesperson of the Ministry of National Defence (MApN), Corneliu Pavel, told AGERPRES on Tuesday.
'We have a war at the border, a brutal war waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, a democratic European state. The situation this morning is ongoing. For the first time a RO-ALERT message was issued for Vrancea County. Our aircraft are airborne now, monitoring the situation and the pilots have authorisation to engage the aerial target,' the MApN representative pointed out.
Regarding the situation monitored in the morning in Tulcea and Galati counties, Corneliu Pavel could not say whether it was a single drone or a group of drones.
'Most likely it was a single drone, but I cannot confirm one hundred per cent that the drone that entered Tulcea County is the same as the one in Galati County,' the MApN spokesperson added.
Russian drone attacks on Ukraine have intensified over the past week and their effects have been felt particularly in Tulcea County, as for the first time since the escalation of Russian aggression a fuel vessel anchored on the Danube in the Ukrainian port of Izmail caught fire and the population of two Romanian villages was evacuated for around 24 hours.
At the end of last week the ferry crossing of the Danube between the town of Isaccea, Tulcea County, Romania, and Orlivka, Odesa region, Ukraine, was suspended after the Ukrainian customs office was closed following a Russian drone attack.
