Margarine, hygiene services, water, sewerage, sanitation topping March 2025 price increases in Romania

Margarine, hygiene and cosmetic services, water, sewerage, sanitation are topping the March 2025 year-on-year price increases in Romania, according to data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Thus, hygiene and cosmetic services became more expensive by 14.78% as against March 2024, margarine by 12.73%, and water, sewerage and sanitation by 12.43%.

As for food supplies, they have become more expensive, on average, by 5.10% as against March 2024. The largest price increases were recorded for margarine (14.73%), citrus fruits and other southern fruits (10.48%) and fruits and canned fruits (9.57%). Price cuts were recorded for sugar (-4.89%) and potatoes (-2.99%).

As against February 2025, coffee (3.37%), cocoa and coffee (2.85%) and sugar, sugar products and honey (2.20%) became more expensive. On the other hand, sugar was cheaper by 1.42% in March 2025 over the previous month, eggs by 0.34%, and honey by 0.12%

In terms of non-food goods, in March 2025, compared to March 2024, tobacco and cigarettes became more expensive by 8.15%, other non-food goods by 7.80%, knitwear and books, newspapers and magazines by 7.34% each. On the other hand, gas prices fell by 2.28% and electricity by 1.78%.

On a monthly basis, other non-food goods cost 1.14% more, textiles 0.84% more, and knitwear 0.75% more. According to INS, in this category there were price cuts in gas, by 2.29%, fuels, by 1.77%, and electricity, by 1.20%.

As for services in 2024, tariffs for hygiene and cosmetics increased the most, by 14.78%, water, sewerage, sanitation services, by 12.43%, and other industrial services, by 11.66%. On the other hand, tariffs for telephone calls fell by 4.71%, air transport services by 1.24%, and postal and telecommunications services by 1.05%.

In March 2025, as against the previous month, price raises were recorded for car repairs, electronics and photo works (2.26%), hygiene and cosmetics (2.06%), and clothing and footwear manufacturing and repair (1.75%). Price cuts were recorded for television subscriptions, by 0.48%, and postal and telecommunications subscriptions, by 0.20%.

The annual inflation rate fell in March 2025 to 4.86%, from 5.02% in February, as prices for food goods rose by 5.10%, non-food goods by 3.84%, and services by 6.99%.
