General Mayor of Bucharest Gabriela Firea on Saturday told Antena 3 private television station, when referring to the incidents that took place at the Victoria Square, that she expected for all leaders of the state institutions to make statements in order to endorse the legality of "any activity."
"I believe that institutions should have had some brief mentions through their spokesmen, their Press Offices, if not necessarily through the institution's leader - Presidency, Parliament, Government, ministries (...) I don't think it is a moment of my weakness or the City Hall's, but it is a time when we want to prove wisdom, responsibility, to signal that all the state institutions and citizens must react when the Constitution and the laws of the country are broken and not look passive and as though is something that does not concern us. (...) I would have expected that all leaders of the state institutions, institutions in charge, make statements to support the legality of any activity. Unfortunately, I noticed passivity, and worse than that, joy, that such thing is happening to the City Hall, inducements to protesters to be more verbally and physically violent, which is not good for democracy," Firea said.
When asked if the demonstrators had any permit for the protests, Gabriela Firea stated "there was no approval from the Bucharest City Hall."
"The protection fence and scene were vandalized by the protesters. I organised an emergency committee, a command, we analyzed all these facts, and, especially, we weighed very much the situation in which we are, namely that no institution of the Romanian state intervened with an official position, given that the legislation in Romania is being trampled. (...) We have publicly announced the organisation of this event that has all the approvals, according to the legislation in force, and we, basically, were not allowed to carry out this activity by tens of persons," the Mayor claimed.
General Mayor of Bucharest Gabriela Firea announced on Saturday, in a news release, that she decided to move the Carols Festival and the Christmas Fair to another location and argued that the public space belongs to everyone, it "cannot be booked" to an ad-hoc, or, on the contrary, to a well-organized group."
Some of the protesters in the Victoria Square that started a conflict on Saturday with City Hall employees, who were setting up the holiday fair, pushed the protection fences and tried to enter the road.
