MEC to award 157 laureate pupils at international and regional Olympiads

The Ministry of Education and Research (MEC) will organize on Wednesday an award ceremony at the National Children's Palace for the pupils who are laureates of international and regional Olympiads held in 2025, for the teachers who prepared them and for the educational units where they study or have studied.

According to a release sent to AGERPRES, 157 Olympiad pupils from 72 state-owned and private pre-university units from 29 counties and Bucharest will be awarded. These pupils won 206 medals, awards and mentions at 35 international Olympiads and regional Olympiads or competitions in school subjects for juniors and seniors. They participated in 14 Olympiads at global level and 21 Olympiads at European regional level.

The total awards fund allocated this year by the Ministry of Education and Research is 4,454,542 lei.

At the International Olympiad Gala, 179 teachers who mentored the pupils will also be awarded.

A total of 72 educational units will likewise be rewarded. Among the 157 deserving pupils, one received six distinctions, five received four distinctions each, another five received three distinctions each and 19 received two distinctions each.

"Of the total 206 medals/awards, the Romanian pupils won 4 absolute gold medals (with maximum score), 59 gold medals/first prizes, 61 silver medals/second prizes, 53 bronze medals/third prizes and 29 mentions or equivalent certificates," the release said.

The Ministry of Education and Research grants pupils who won medals, the teachers who mentored them and the educational units they come from certificates and cash awards, in line with the legal provisions on encouraging high academic performance in pre-university education.

"For the teachers who prepared the pupil/pupils, only one financial incentive is granted, at the highest amount provided for one of the awarded pupils. When an awarded pupil has been mentored by two or more teachers, the financial incentive is divided equally among all the teachers involved," the MEC explained.

For the educational unit that the pupil/pupils attend/ or have attended, one award is granted for each awarded pupil, in the amount provided for that pupil. In this case, the incentives received will be used for equipment intended to support the quality of the educational process, directed with priority to the subject/subjects in which the academic achievements were obtained.
