INS: Romania counts 113,303 enterprise groups in 2024, 108,401 of them multinationals

In 2024, Romania had 113,303 enterprise groups, of which 4,902 were resident and 108,401 were multinationals (661 controlled domestically and 107,740 foreign-controlled), according to the National Institute of Statistics (INS) data published on Tuesday.

According to the quoted source, Germany, France and the United States occupy the top three positions in the ranking of countries that control enterprise subgroups in Romania, the ranking remaining unchanged compared with 2023.

In 2024, over 4.3 percent of the business groups identified nationally were resident (4,902 groups).

In the same year, of the multinational enterprise groups controlled from abroad and identified in Romania, 20,411 were groups controlled by foreign legal entities and 87,329 by foreign individuals.

The majority of enterprise groups in Romania operate in trade, a trend that has remained stable in recent years, the INS mentioned.

The distribution of Romanian business groups by economic activity, at the CAEN Rev.2 section level, shows that most operate in: Section G - Wholesale and retail trade, Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (31.3 percent of all enterprise groups); Section F - Construction (11.6 percent); Section M - Professional, scientific and technical activities (8.2 percent); Section C - Manufacturing (9.2 percent); Section L - Real estate activities (8.1 percent).

Resident enterprise groups are primarily active in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles - 17 percent; manufacturing - 10.8 percent; construction - 10.3 percent; professional, scientific and technical activities - 9.3 percent and other service activities - 8.1 percent.

Official statistics also show that in Romania, in the mentioned year, 27.3 percent of all employees in active enterprises worked in enterprise which were part of multinational groups controlled from abroad, down from 29.9 percent in 2023.

In terms of employee share, most enterprise subgroups in Romania are controlled from Germany, France and the US, with the ranking unchanged from the previous year.

The 2024 results indicate that, by employee share, subgroups controlled by German legal or natural persons rank first (18.9 percent), those controlled from France second (10.5 percent), and those controlled from the US third (9.3 percent).

By share of employees in total multinational enterprise groups controlled from abroad, enterprise subgroups controlled from Germany predominate in Section C - Manufacturing (9.8 percent), Section G - Wholesale and retail trade; Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (4.6 percent), and Section J - Information and communication (1.4 percent).

For enterprise subgroups controlled from France, 4 percent of employees work in Section C - Manufacturing, 2.3 percent in Section G - Wholesale and retail trade; Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, and 1.1 percent in Section J - Information and communication.

The enterprise subgroups controlled from the US have the highest number of employee in Section C - Manufacturing (3.5 percent), Section J - Information and communication (3.0 percent), and Section N - Administrative and support service activities (1.2 percent).
