Foreign Affairs Minister (MAE) Teodor Melescanu, who made an official visit to Turkmenistan, 2 through 4 July, discussed with Turkmen officials about consolidating bilateral relations and about collaboration within the United Nations.
According to a press release sent by MAE to AGERPRES on Wednesday, Teodor Melescanu had meetings with the President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguli Berdamuhamedov and with Turkmen Government and Parliament officials, participating in a series of diplomatic and cultural events.
He also discussed with Parliament Speaker Gulshat Mammedovam, with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Rashid Meredov, and also with Deputy Prime Minister overseeing transportation and communications Mammetan Ceakiev.
"Discussions with Turkmen officials aimed to evaluate the bilateral cooperation and identify means of consolidating and developing Romania-Turkmenistan relations in various fields. The collaboration between the two countries within the UN was also discussed, as well as topics of interest concerning international evolutions from Central Asia. The two parties appreciated as positive the diplomatic-political dynamic dialogue and highlighted the importance of valorization of the existing potential on the economic scale," the press release mentions.
According to MAE, another topic brought to the attention by the head of the Romanian diplomacy was Romania's taking over, on January 1, 2019, of the quarterly presidency of the Council of the European Union, context in which he made reference to the perspective of launching a new EU strategy for Central Asia. In this sense, Teodor Melescanu participated in a meeting with locally accredited Heads of Mission of EU member states.
The visit's agenda included a lecture, held by Melescanu at the International University of Humanities and Development of Turkmenistan. He encouraged the Turkmen youth to choose Romania for a solid professional training, highlighting the experience of Romanian educational institutions in various fields of study and the tradition in the training process of foreign students.
Moreover, the Minister took part in the opening ceremony of the Educational Work Fare of higher Romanian education institutions, held at Ashgabat, attended by twenty Romanian higher learning institutions, the press release further informs.
