MEP Iuliu Winkler (Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania - UDMR, European People's Party - EPP), said on Wednesday in Deva, that there is a need to continue the digitisation process in Romania, including the way votes are processed, as this process is slow and generates unpleasant situations.

"For me, Caragiale is alive, because when I see the image of a person carrying bags of votes with a wheelbarrow, I realize that Caragiale is alive in our country. We need to enter the 21st century, we have European funds for this, over 4 billion euros (...) for digitisation, to enter the 21st century, to have a digitised population register, to have digitised services, and, among many other advantages, to stop carrying bags of votes at midnight or at 5,00 in the morning from one place to another, from one city to another. It is perfectly ridiculous to do this in the 21st century," the MEP told a press conference.

Asked why digitisation is not happening in Romania, Iuliu Winkler said that there is no political will to create a "government cloud" in which all public services, starting with public administration, tax, financial, customs and others, would be included.

In the MEP's opinion, digitisation in public services would bring benefits to citizens, from administration issues to those related to increasing Romania's economic competitiveness.

"Probably everything that prevents us from having the government cloud - because the digitisation of public services, the digitisation of public administration, tax, financial, customs and all the others starts with the government cloud - for which we have the money, but we don't have the political will. (...) I think it is imperative that we take digitisation seriously, because otherwise we will lose not only in the quality of public services to the citizen or in the quality of the voting system and the electoral system, but we will also lose economic competitiveness in the coming years, if we do not urgently take some steps towards digitisation," argued UDMR Hunedoara leader Iuliu Winkler.

He headed the the list of UDMR candidates for the European Parliament elections on 9 June, winning his fifth mandate as a MEP.
