The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) conveyed, on Wednesday, a message on the occasion of the 67th anniversary of Romania's admission for membership in the United Nations, in which he shows that the rules-based international order, as well as the values and principles of the UN Charter are currently subject to unprecedented challenges, in the context of the Russian Federation's war against Ukraine.

"This war has generated and, respectively, amplified multiple crises with regional and global implications, underlining the importance of supporting and strengthening effective multilateralism, as well as defending the rules-based international order and the international law," specifies MAE, in a press release sent to AGERPRES .

According to the cited source, our country's "deep" attachment to the United Nations and its involvement in strengthening multilateralism, including at the United Nations level, so necessary in the current global context, represents one of the basic pillars of Romania's foreign policy, and diplomacy will continue to consistently promote its objectives, in an effort to support progress towards a safer, freer and more prosperous world.

"Romania has continuously affirmed and diversified its profile as a substantial supporter and partner of the United Nations, having made significant contributions to the evolution of the organization, the strengthening of the international legal system, the maintenance of international peace and security, the promotion of democracy and human rights, the global development policies," highlights the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

At the same time, MAE shows, membership of the United Nations allowed Romania to have a substantial participation in the activity of the specialized agencies, programmes and development funds of the UN system.

"After joining the European Union, Romania's activity at the United Nations also included the promotion of some topics and concerns of interest to the EU. In the perspective of the new membership mandate in the Human Rights Council, which will begin on January 1, 2023, Romania will continue to act for the promotion and protection of human rights, for the consolidation of democratic values and the support of the rule of law," states the ministry.

According to MAE, Romania's long-term commitment to promoting compliance with international law, as a fundamental pillar of foreign policy, has been demonstrated including through the series of actions initiated in the context of the illegal, unjustified and unprovoked war waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine to support the allocation of responsibility and combating the impunity of those representatives of the occupying power who committed international crimes in the invaded territories.

Romania has demonstrated its quality as an involved, active and reliable international actor in support of UN values, including in humanitarian terms, as shown by Romania's multi-dimensional efforts in support of Ukraine and of the more than 3 million refugees who have crossed the borders of our country since the beginning of the war in the neighboring state, as well as by providing them with shelter, free access to medical services, schooling and the labor market, the message further underscores.

Romania "actively" contributed to the efforts to prevent food insecurity at the global level, both by facilitating the transit of over 10 million tonnes of grain from Ukraine to world markets, and through multilateral actions, such as the support given to the activities of the World Food Programme, and the granting of a contribution of 100,000 euros for the UN's Central Emergency Respond Fund (CERF), intended to combat hunger, reports MAE.

"Romania will act, as it has until now, together with its partners, in the spirit of effective multilateralism and will attach significant importance to the identification of global responses to strengthen democratic values, respect for fundamental human rights and freedoms and the rules-based international order, for the development of sustainable economies and resilient, equitable and inclusive societies, in which 'no one is left behind'. Among the efforts in this sense is the participation of our country in the collective efforts to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the obligations established by the Paris Agreement on climate change," indicates the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
