Minister Carmen Dan meets British Ambassador; discussions focus on Brexit, bilateral cooperation

Carmen Dan

Minister of Interior Carmen Dan on Thursday discussed with British Ambassador Andrew Noble about the latest developments regarding Brexit and also about aspects regarding police cooperation at bilateral level.

In respect to Brexit, the Minister underscored that the priority of the authorities in Bucharest remains the protection of the rights of Romanian citizens in the United Kingdom.

"While holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, we are interested in minimizing as much as possible the negative effects that would affect the lives of the citizens and that's why we maintain this constant dialogue with all our European partners on this topic," said Carmen Dan, according to a release of the MAI sent to AGERPRES.

In respect to the British citizens living on the Romanian territory, the Romanian official assured that their rights will be respected regardless of the scenario that will materialize for Brexit, in the spirit of reciprocity to the British approach.

The Ambassador also mentioned these discussions are welcome for the British citizens in Romania and they will continue, including on a technical level, depending on the evolution of the situation on this topic.

"In what concerns bilateral police cooperation, MAI is interested in maintaining the operative projects that are carried out with the Metropolitan Police, Transport Police and the territorial police forces, with nine representatives of the Romanian Police being now on a operative support mission in the UK," reads the release.

The meeting on Thursday continued the discussions on the sidelines of the JHA Council meeting of December 2018 with the British Minister for Migration, Caroline Nokes.

Next week, the Minister for Migration in the UK is invited to participate in the Informal meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council to take place in Bucharest.
