Minister-delegate Negrescu: Romania, ahead of schedule with preparations for managing its EU Council's presidency

Victor Negrescu

Minister-delegate for European Affairs Victor Negrescu said on Friday in Cluj that Romania is ahead of the official schedule of the European Council with preparations for the management of its future presidency of the Council of the European Union. Negrescu attended a debate on this topic on Friday, where he also talked about the importance of this information reaching all citizens, which is why a series of activities will be organised, some designed for students, and they meetings will take place in each county.

"There are things happening. We all want to increase the administrative capacity of the public system in Romania to manage the future presidency of the European Union. Today, we are ahead of the official schedule of the European Council with the preparations, and we have identified the 1,500 experts who will be involved in this process, who starting this November will be providing a training programme inviting also universities through the European Institute of Romania; some have decided to contribute from the start," said Negrescu.

He mentioned in his speech a new initiative that a few months ago did not exist, namely to carry out training programmes with partner universities from abroad as well as with Romanian universities, plus the training programmes to be provided by experts from the European Commission and the European Council. Negrescu said there are 1,500 experts and 250 chairs and deputy chairs of working groups who will shape up and negotiate European debates, pointing out that Romania taking over the presidency of the Council of the European Union should not be a moment when Romania seeks only to look good.

Negrescu on Friday attended a debate called "the EU reform: options for the European design," an event that is part of a debate campaign to prepare Romania for holding the presidency of the EU Council. It was organsied in partnership with the Faculty of European Studies of the Babes-Bolyai University.
