Romania firmly supports the competitiveness of the automotive industry and the advancement of recycling, which is essential for the transition to an efficient circular economy, Minister of Environment, Waters and Forestry Mircea Fechet wrote on Tuesday on Facebook, as he attends the meeting of the EU Environment ministers in Luxembourg.

"Romania firmly supports the competitiveness of the automotive industry and recycling upscaling, which is essential for the transition to an efficient circular economy. This is what I conveyed to the Environment Council, where I met with EU counterparts to analyze how we can have a more sustainable automotive industry, to discuss climate change, national energy and climate plans (NECPs), but also how to increase Europe's resilience in the field of water management," Fechet wrote.

The Romanian official said that there were important topics on the agenda, "but the priority was for everyone to agree - in line with the goals of the European Green Deal - on the Regulation on circularity requirements for the design of vehicles and the management of those that have reached the end of their service life."

According to Fechet, the way of reducing dependence on imported primary resources is a key element in increasing economic resilience and in developing an efficient and attractive market for secondary raw materials, underscoring in this context the role of the Deposit Return System - a successful initiative for package collection and circular economy, and welcoming the fact that the Commission's proposal for a cross-border extended producer responsibility regime was maintained.

"Regarding the EU climate target for 2040, I pointed out that we need a pragmatic and equitable approach, that takes into account the contribution of each state and the social impact of the transition, in order to prevent increasing existing disparities and reduce energy poverty.

With Romania having recently faced disastrous floods, I underscored the importance of the European Water Resilience Strategy, as well as the need to intensify cross-border cooperation, including in the Black Sea area. I hope that we will soon see measures developed based on this Strategy, and economic instruments that support the recovery of the environmental costs of water use and provide protection against water-related risks," the Romanian Environment minister said.

As part of the dialogue with the industry, Fechet mentioned that he once again emphasized Romania's commitment to achieving climate goals and the need for continued support from the European Commission, not only in terms of technical assistance, but also for facilitating access to available financing instruments.

Fechet said that he also met with Danish Minister for Climate, Energy and Utilities Lars Aagaard, with whom he discussed the 2040 climate target, telling him that, for Romania, it is important that this target is achieved against the backdrop of a fair contribution.

Minister of Environment, Waters and Forestry Mircea Fechet participated on Tuesday in the Luxembourg meeting of the EU Environment ministers, having as main topics end-of-life vehicles, the EU at COP30 - stocktaking report and perspectives - and various other subjects.
