43 cases of West Nile virus infections, one death, since June

The National Public Health Institute (INSP) announced that between 2 June and 9 October, a total of 43 cases of West Nile virus infection have been reported in Romania.

Of these, 37 are confirmed cases, and six are considered probable.

According to INSP, there has been one death caused by West Nile virus infection.

The cases were recorded in Bucharest (13) and the following counties: Alba (1), Braila (5), Botosani (1), Cluj (1), Dolj (1), Dambovita (1), Galati (6), Ilfov (3), Iasi (2), Prahova (1), Sibiu (1), Salaj (1), Timis(2), Teleorman (1), Tulcea (1), Valcea (1), Vrancea (1).

The breakdown by age group is as follows: 21 cases in the 70-79 age group; 8 cases aged 60-69; 7 cases aged 50-59; 2 cases aged 40-49; 3 cases over the age of 80; 1 case in the 10-19 age group; 1 case aged 30-39.

In this context, INSP specialists have issued the following recommendations for the public: avoid exposure to mosquitoes by wearing long-sleeved clothing and long trousers; use mosquito-repellent substances; prevent mosquitoes from entering the home (e.g. by using window screens); drain standing water from around the household; remove containers with stagnant water and household waste from the premises.
