Minister of Justice Stelian Ion states that the Report of the European Commission on the rule of law at EU level, published on Tuesday, explicitly states that the repeal of the Section for the Investigation of Judicial Crimes (SIIJ) and the restoration of the powers of the National Anti-corruption Directorate (DNA), the Directorate of Investigation of Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) and the prosecutor's offices with the Courts of Appeal is the right solution to eliminate potential pressure on magistrates.
This is the second year the EC has published the analysis carried out in each Member State, in terms of respect for the rule of law, in four chapters: independence of the judiciary, fight against corruption, freedom of the press and the system of control and institutional balance, agerpres.ro confirms.
"This is the first year the European Commission evaluates Romania both under the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism and under the Rule of Law Mechanism. We have two monitoring reports, drawn by objective European experts, which assess the measures taken so far by the Ministry of Justice and the Government and encourages us to continue the reforms at an accelerated pace. (...) I hope that from next year there will only be general monitoring, within this last mechanism. We have only one condition to fulfill, namely the observance of the CVM recommendations, which would lead to the lifting of this monitoring in force since the accession to the EU. The tone of today's report is encouraging, and the objective and well-argued image it offers of the justice system helps us to identify measures to repair what has gone wrong for years in the judiciary," Stelian Ion was quoted as saying.
