Minister of Development, Public Works and Administration Adrian-Ioan Vestea discussed on Tuesday with the Japanese Ambassador to Romania, Takashi Katae, about the launch of inter-institutional pilot projects for research and innovation on the introduction of digital tools and techniques in disaster risk management, informs a press release from the Ministry of Development (MDLPA) sent to AGERPRES.

According to the cited source, the pilot projects will be initiated with the involvement of the private, academic and research sectors and of the public authorities, which will help optimize action plans and risk management policies so that public authorities can act quickly and effectively in the event of an earthquake.

At the same time, as a preventive measure, pilot projects have been proposed for the integration of new technologies and materials in the seismic strengthening of buildings and in the rehabilitation of local road infrastructure.

In March last year, Romania and Japan signed a Strategic Partnership aimed at strengthening cooperation relations between the two countries, including in the field of disaster risk reduction, the MDLPA recalled.

According to the press release, the two officials agreed to exchange best practices on technical regulations in the fields of urban planning and construction, post-disaster assessment of damage to buildings, post-disaster safety of buildings and the establishment of intervention solutions, as well as the implementation of modern reconstruction solutions.

Romania and Japan are already successfully cooperating at the scientific and technological level within the High Power Optics Center (ELI-NP), a project financed by the Ministry of Development, Public Works and Administration, through the National Investment Company, the release said.

"I am very confident that the Romanian - Japanese partnership will continue and will bring new opportunities for research and development, valuable experience exchanges and results with visible long-term effects for both countries. In this regard, I reaffirm the commitment and full availability of the representatives of the Ministry of Development to strengthen this fruitful collaboration in areas of national interest and I particularly appreciate the commitment of Japanese experts to participate in joint actions with the Romanian state," minister Vestea said, as quoted in the press release.
