Romanian police tracked down Mircea Geoana's fugitive brother-in-law Ionut Costea in Istanbul and legal procedures are currently being carried out to enforce the warrant issued by the Bucharest Tribunal, Romanian Police officials said.

"Today, February 5, following the exchange of data and information carried out by the Sirene Bureau of the International Police Cooperation Center of the Romanian Police General Inspectorate with the Turkish authorities, a 64-year-old man internationally wanted for bribery was located in Istanbul," the Romanian Police General Inspectorate reports.

A warrant was issued by the Bucharest Tribunal in Costea's name for a 6-year prison sentence.

Ionut Costea was put on the international wanted list in May 2023, after fleeing Romania to escape a six-year prison sentence for corruption. He is the brother of Mircea Geoana's wife, and at one point served as director of Eximbank.

Costea was convicted alongside former Finance Minister Sebastian Vladescu in a case related to the award of a contract for the rehabilitation of the Bucharest-Constanta railway section to a consortium of Austrian companies. The Romanian officials involved in the case demanded a bribe of 20 million euros.
