AGERPRES special correspondent Cristian Lupascu reports: Moldovan Education Minister Dan Perciun proposes Romania to conclude an agreement for the mutual recognition of university diplomas, arguing that dual-recognition diplomas could reduce departures of young students from Moldova to Romania.
Minister Dan Perciun stressed on Thursday, during a joint meeting in Chisinau of university rectors from Moldova and Romania, that the mutual recognition of university degrees "would be the most advantageous form of collaboration" in the field of education.
"We are making tremendous efforts in Moldova to increase admission numbers, and in the last two years we have consistently had a higher number of high school graduates who chose to study in Moldova. It is also the result of the investments that have been made, and of the fact that young people are gaining more trust in the Republic of Moldova, given its proximity to the European Union," he said.
"Brain drain is a threat to the Republic of Moldova. We need domestic capacity. In this context, I would like us to discuss scholarships in Romania, but at the same time, dual-recognition degrees. There are several universities that have initiated such programs with our colleagues and I would be curious if we can scale this process, and maybe redirect a certain part of the resources granted by the Romanian state towards double degrees. I believe that this would be the most advantageous form of collaboration for us at this moment, and it would be better aligned with our fundamental interests to increase the internal capacity, because without additional capacity it will be very difficult for us to advance in the European integration process," Perciun also stated.
Custodian of the Crown of Romania, Her Majesty Margareta, and His Royal Highness Prince Radu also attended the meeting of the rectors of Republic of Moldova and Romania universities.
The meeting was chaired by the Rector of the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Chisinau Emil Ceban, who is also the President of the Council of Rectors of the Republic of Moldova, and by the Rector of the University of Agronomic Sciences and Veterinary Medicine in Bucharest, Sorin Cimpeanu, who is the President of the National Council of Rectors of Romania.
