The Constanta South Border Police officers and customers after a joint action have seized more than 94,000 smuggled cigarettes, found stashed in the dustbins aboard a Norwegian ship, on Thursday said officials of the Coast Guard, in a release.

At first, the police found only a part of the unstamped cigarettes in a motor vehicle, while its driver, a 42-year old Romanian national, was striving to leave the Constanta Port. The driver told the police that the Assos Red 34,800 cigarettes were from a ship under Norwegian flag, anchored in Constanta South Agigea Port. After an extended search, the rest of the smuggled cigarettes, meaning 60,000, Assos Red and Fast brands, were found aboard the Norwegian ship, in several dustbins and in the crew's cabins.

"The commander and the crew told the police the entire amount of cigarettes was purchased in Gibraltar, for own use," the release adds.

The total amount of 94,800 cigarettes worth 75,840 lei, was confiscated, and the motor vehicle was impounded at the headquarters of the Coast Guard until investigation is completed.
