Romsilva announced on Thursday that the hunting grounds where a motorcyclist was fatally attacked by a bear in the Transfagarasan area hosts a bear population of 112, compared to an optimal estimated number of 25.

'The Arefu Hunting Grounds No. 5, where the incident occurred, is managed by the Arges Forestry Directorate and, according to the official assessment conducted this spring, has a population of 112 bears, compared to an optimal number estimated at 25,' the institution shows in a message posted on its Facebook page, agerpres reports.

According to the same source, since the beginning of the year, two bears have been legally culled as part of the full prevention quota; three others under derogations issued in accordance with Law 242/2024 (interventions outside inhabited areas); and two under Government Emergency Ordinance 81/2021 (immediate intervention).

Additionally, a female bear with cubs, identified as displaying aggressive behaviour, was relocated from the area near Poenari Fortress.

'In the Transfagarasan area, the Arges Forestry Directorate has installed more than 20 warning signs, including in English, at identified risk points. The bear population is constantly monitored by wildlife managers. Once again, we appeal for responsibility to avoid such incidents: DO NOT feed bears; DO NOT interact with them; DO NOT take photographs or approach them; Bears are wild animals, they belong in the forest!,' the statement continues.

Across the 107 hunting grounds managed by Romsilva that host bear populations, this spring's assessment identified a total of 3,186 bears, compared to an optimal number of 948.

For these areas, a 2025 prevention quota of 52 bears was approved, of which 26 have been culled so far.

The body of the motorcyclist who was attacked on Thursday on DN 7C - the Transfagarasan Road - was recovered from a 70-80 metre ravine, Ion Sanduloiu, head of Salvamont Arges, told AGERPRES.

To alert the public, a RO-ALERT message was issued for the area.
