Two teams made of 15 mountain rescuers succeeded on Sunday to recover, with the help of a Mobile Emergency Resuscitation and Extrication Service (SMURD) helicopter, the bodies of the two tourists from Ploiesti who died on Saturday after sliding hundreds of meters from Netedu Peak in the Fagaras Mountains, the director of the Sibiu County Mountain Rescue Service Dan Popescu announced.

"The bodies were transported along the valley path to a point where the SMURD helicopter was able to take them over together with one of the mountain rescuers for transport to the base of the mountain. At this moment, the arrival of the crew of the Forensic Medicine Institute and possibly of a forensic team is expected. The mountain rescuers are retreating on foot, it will take about 3-4 hours until they reach the base of the mountain," explained Dan Popescu, told Agerpres.

The operation to recover the bodies of the tourists - both men, ages 35 and 50, respectively - began on Saturday, but adverse weather conditions hindered its completion. On Sunday, the intervention was again hampered by the weather, as fog and clouds surrounded the area of the accident.

The two mountain hikers were accompanied by a third one, also from Ploiesti - who was lucky to survive and was winched into the SMURD helicopter on Saturday, with the help of a mountain rescuer. "His condition wasn't serious, after the helicopter landed he left for his car in the Balea Cauldron," Dan Popescu told AGERPRES.

According to the cited source, the three "were not properly equipped for the serious winter conditions in the area".
