Social Democratic Party (PSD) MP Simona Bucura Oprescu announced on Thursday that, at the Party of European Socialists (PES) Women Annual Conference, held in Amsterdam, she was elected to the new leadership team as a member of the Executive Bureau.

"I am grateful for the trust and support of my colleagues from Romania and across Europe. Congratulations to the colleagues who ran and were elected, as well as to President Zita Gurmai, to whom I wish much success in her new term as PES Women President! Alongside me at the PES Women Conference today were Maria Lazar, Secretary General of the OFSD [Organisation of Social Democratic Women], and Mariana Gaju, Mayor of Cumpana, President of the OFSD Constanta, and member of the European Committee of the Regions," Simona Bucura Oprescu wrote on her Facebook page.

She thanked MEP Victor Negrescu, Vice President of the European Parliament, National Coordinator of the PES Activists Romania, the PSD and interim PSD President Sorin Grindeanu for their support.

"My commitment today is simple but firm: to bring the voice of women from Romania into the European dialogue and to contribute, with energy, expertise and passion, to the mission of PES Women. Together, through solidarity and determination, we can build a Europe where every woman - regardless of her origin - can live, work and dream in freedom," she added.

The PES Women is the women's organisation of the Party of European Socialists (PES), which promotes gender equality and women's rights, Bucura Oprescu also wrote.

She mentioned that, as a member of the Executive Bureau, she aims to strengthen the representation of women in political structures and decision-making bodies at all levels - so that women are not only present but also influential; support national organisations through training programmes, mentorship and best practice exchanges; promote the inclusion of women in vulnerable situations - young mothers, women from rural areas, single parents; encourage female entrepreneurship; create safe communities for women, free from violence and discrimination in all its forms.

"Too many women are still living in fear in Europe - fear of abuse, exclusion, or simply not being heard. But we know that equality can no longer wait. It is not a dream, but a political mission that requires courage, empathy and perseverance. Stronger women mean a better society. A strong woman educates her children, strengthens her community and contributes to peace and prosperity," Simona Bucura Oprescu also conveyed.
