Orally administered antivirals are effective in all viral variants of COVID-19, but they can only be administered to patients eligible for such treatment following a doctor's prescription, according to the specialists from the Infectious Diseases Committee of the Ministry of Health (MS).

Specialists from the Infectious Diseases Committee of the Ministry of Health have provided information on how to use antiviral drugs, which is part of the series of informative materials "You must know, for your health!".

According to them, treatment should be started as soon as possible after the diagnosis of COVID-19 and no later than 5-7 days after the symptoms onset.

"Oral antivirals are small molecules that block the activity and replication of the virus. They must be given as soon as possible after infection, before the virus causes damage to tissues and organs. These drugs are given orally for several days, which means oral antivirals are effective in all viral variants of COVID-19. Patients should discuss with their physician whether they are eligible for oral antiviral treatment. Oral antivirals may be given only after the decision has been made, as soon as possible after the diagnosis of COVID-19 and no later than 5-7 days after the onset of symptoms," the information reads.

Specialists also warn about contraindications and side effects that must be taken into account, Agerpres informs.
